2014 Socialist Organizing Weekend

A DSA Fund leadership retreat on activism and political education for rising YDSers and young DSAers.

All YDSers and young DSAers actively building a chapter or involved in DSA's national projects are strongly encouraged to attend our 2014 summer leadership retreat.

Being openly anti-capitalist isn’t the easiest way to be an activist, but it’s the most strategic. It's critical for changing the political possibilities of the entire progressive movement. We fight every day against rising student debt and inequality, union busting, and the racist, sexist and homophobic actions taken by individuals and institutions in our lives. Since we have a long-term vision for a better world, we join these struggles purposefully as democratic socialists. DSA is committed to building an independent and democratic activist organization, rooted in schools, and neighborhoods, that both fights for change today and wins larger numbers to democratic socialism.

The goal of the socialist organizing weekend is to prepare YDSers and young DSAers with the skills needed to organize activist campaigns for social justice and to talk effectively about democratic socialism.

  • Skills trainings: how to facilitate meetings, plan campaigns, grow chapters, etc.
  • Political education workshops: intersectionality and anti-oppression, the history of the socialist and social movements in the United States, and our vision of democratic socialism.
  • Self-organized workshops: we will coordinate with conference attendees in advance who wish to self-organize workshops.

We will also take part of the organizing weekend to discuss the ongoing DSA strategy conversation. YDSers will have an opportunity to run for our national coordinating committee and vote on our activist agenda priorities for the coming school year.

The organizing weekend will be busy, but we’re going to set aside ample time for hanging out and socializing. One of the best parts of the summer conference is the opportunity to meet socialists from all over the country and develop life-long friendships.

Where: Antiochian Village in Bolivar, (western) Pennsylvania. If you need to fly, fly to Pittsburgh International Airport and we will help arrange ground transportation from there. As always we will also fundraise to provide limited travel scholarships to help YDSers attend the conference.

When: Thursday evening, August 7th – Sunday afternoon, August 10th

Cost: Registration will be $175. This includes the cost of registration, food, and housing for the full weekend. Again there will be travel scholarships and this year there will be childcare scholarships; more information to come about how to apply.

Children are welcome! We are committed to cover the extra costs for parents who wish to bring their kids, and we will have childcare scholarships if one parent stays home with the kids to allow the other to attend the conference.

RSVPing BELOW is just a way to indicate interest. We'll follow up with more information this summer.
